Understanding Email Events

When sending emails, you might see different events that tell you what happened with your email and how the receiving server interacted with it. Here’s a breakdown of the events:

  1. Delivered
    • What it means: The receiving server accepted the email. However, this doesn’t guarantee the email landed in the recipient’s inbox—it could also end up in spam or even be dropped by the server. Still, in 99.99% of cases, it means the recipient got the email.
  2. Bounced (type: blocked)
    • What it means: The email was temporarily rejected, often due to spam filters or other technical issues.
    • Common causes:
      • The sending IP or domain is on a deny list.
      • Technical issues on the recipient’s server.
    • Note: This is the most important event to watch out for. If an email bounces as "blocked," the recipient won’t get it. This usually happens because their email provider has blocked our emails, and the customer can’t fix it. In this case, ask them for an alternative email (e.g., a Gmail address).
  3. Bounced (type: bounced)
    • What it means: The email was permanently rejected by the receiving server, often due to a permanent issue. Once this happens, the recipient’s email address is suppressed to prevent further sending attempts. Ask the customer if the email written correctly. This is not a likely scenario.
    • Common causes:
      • The email address is invalid or doesn’t exist.
      • The recipient’s server is unreachable.
  4. Deferred
    • What it means: The email delivery was delayed because the recipient’s server temporarily restricted access. SendGrid will keep trying to deliver the email for up to 72 hours. If this happens let the customer know that it can take some time for the email to arrive. This is not a likely scenario to happen.
    • Common causes:
      • The recipient’s server is experiencing high traffic.
      • There are temporary technical issues on the server.
